Our Impact
After the first few years of its launch, the Ashoka-US office hit its stride. Between 2003-2008, Ashoka-US has:
1) More than doubled the US Fellowship to over 100 Fellows who more closely reflect the diversity of our country, including the Fellows:
- addressing longstanding and emerging social challenges including aging, climate change, early childhood development, children's health, indigenous interests, immigrant issues, infant mortality, racism, human trafficking, retirement, and tolerance
- using media and technology to spark and invigorate civic engagement
- developing new sources of capital for the citizen sector in a cohort of 50+ social entrepreneurs
2) Supported the success of Fellows by:
- showcasing Fellows at public events and gatherings of the field
- nominating Fellows for national awards
- launching a technical assistance matching grants program
- creating signature marketing materials for each new Fellow
- leveraging the Ashoka network to connect Fellows with strategic partners and mentors
- convening annual meetings, inductions and retreats that serve as a gathering space and platform for leading social innovators
- sparking collaborations among Fellows in the US, North America and globally
- connecting over 80% of Fellows to each other and to Ashoka’s network
- shifting ownership of the Fellowship from staff to Fellows
- engaging Ashoka Fellows with the rising generation of social entrepreneurs through our sister program Youth Venture
4) Expanded and leveraged resources by:
- securing a 5 year renewal from our founding partner, the Jenesis Group
- engaging the Knight Foundation as a major investor/partner
- publishing Recognizing Outstanding Innovators (ROI), an investors guide to US Fellows
- launching the Ashoka Support Network of business entrepreneurs who support social entrepreneurs
- partnering with the Corporate Executive Board, McKinsey & Company, and Hill & Knowlton to support the success of Fellows
