Human Rights
Myth: Human rights violations only happen in other countries.
Fact: Many in the United States believe that human rights violations only occur in other countries, to other people. And many U.S.-based Ashoka Fellows work on behalf of these other countries – leading global torture survivor networks, fighting against sex-trafficking in Asia, empowering deaf people to teach deaf children in Africa, and holding global corporations legally accountable for human rights violations overseas. But their insights also reach into the dark corners of the United States and light the paths to undoing racism, stopping the abuse of women in rural communities, ending the U.S. trafficking of women and children, helping devout youth choose pluralism over religious extremism, using playgrounds to reduce prejudice against the physically impaired, and creating access to justice for the young, the homeless, and the victims of capital crimes. The stories of these Ashoka Fellows, their courage and relentless pursuit of justice, give us a window to a world where the rights to health, prosperity, and peace are possible for all.
